AWAM

AWAM – what you need to know

Academic drowning in workload

Made with Copilot with prompt ‘academic drowning in workload’

Several important things about filling out the Academic Workload Allocation Model (AWAM):

  • Our contractual hours are 1548, not the 1600 in the spreadsheet. This has been communicated to Heads of Department, DEEs and Deans.
    • Here is the calculation for 1548: 52 weeks – (7 weeks annual leave + 8 bank holidays + 2 days xmas shutdown = 9 weeks) = 43 weeks x 36 = 1548)
  • The AWAM is a dynamic document that should be reviewed several times per year and added to as necessary.
  • Members should always screenshot/print/download the latest copy.
  • You should never fill up all your hours as there will always be a need for contingency. This has been acknowledged by the VC and by Deans and should be accepted by your line manager.
  • Check all the calculations are correct!
  • It should be transparent. People and Culture’s own pages have little information on the specifics of this, but the workload policy says there should be summaries circulated and their own pages use the word “transparent”. Talk to your team about sharing AWAMs and working together to fill them out in solidarity!
  • Email your line manager: Confirm agreement/disagrement, raise concerns, queries and requests with evidence/calculations.
  • If in doubt, get in touch with your school rep.
