UEL – an alternative plan for recovery

open meeting for all staff

Introduced by Prof Michael Rustin

Wednesday March 19, 1pm

Room EBG.06

UEL faces very serious problems. Senior management is preparing plans for radical budget cuts, with implications for staff across the University. Why are these cuts imminent? What are the implications for the future of the University? How did we get here – and what is to be done?

What is the future for UEL at a time of austerity and of serious challenges within Higher Education?

A group of academic staff have written a discussion document, which all colleagues are invited to read and which is open for comment at the meeting on March 19. Please find the document attached.

The document has been sent to the Vice Chancellor, who has replied at length with comments on management strategy which are repeated in his recent letter to staff. It has also been sent to the Chair of Governors, who has responded positively and with a request to discuss key issues.

The open meeting on March 19 is a forum at which colleagues from all Schools and services are invited to express their views – and at which we can formulate further initiatives. Please attend and make your views known – and please circulate this notice to colleagues.

Please send written comments to Philip Marfleet: p.marfleet@uel.ac.uk
